Harmony at home with feng shui
Expert advice to create a happier, more harmonious and auspicious abode.
Whether you have just received the keys to your new home or have been living in your residence for a while now, you may be wondering how feng shui can enhance the energy of the space.
The energy, or Qi, of a home is fundamental to its feng shui, says Master SiewLi, Singapore’s leading Metaphysics, Bazi and Feng Shui Master Guide. Master SiewLi (www.siewli.com), who has almost 40 years of practising experience, uniquely integrates the essence of Eastern and Western metaphysics.
“As part of the earth element in the cosmic universe, (a home’s feng shui) can significantly influence the energy or luck of the residents.”
If you’re a new homeowner, Master SiewLi says it’s beneficial to engage a feng shui master to audit the house. This can be done either through an on-site visit or a floor plan audit before you consult an interior designer. This ensures the designer doesn’t need to redo the work and allows the feng shui master to provide a design that harmonises with the interior design for optimal results.
If renovation is not an option, you can still enhance the home’s luck with the use of symbolic feng shui ornaments, she adds.
Here, Master SiewLi shares six pointers for creating and maintaining a positive and harmonious flow of energy in your home.
Minimise clutter and keep areas clean
A good living space is characterised by the presence of positive Qi. To ensure a harmonious environment, avoid overcrowding your home with items you don’t need.
“Keep your wealth areas free of clutter and ‘challenging’ items like broken furniture, rubbish, vacuum cleaners, bicycles, and ladders. Maintaining cleanliness and organisation in these sectors is crucial for fostering a positive and supportive environment,” Master SiewLi says.
Enhance home energy with plants
Living plants, including air plants, can significantly improve the Qi in your home. However, Master SiewLi suggests keeping these pointers in mind to ensure you’re fostering a positive and harmonious environment.
Use living plants: This can enhance the flow of positive energy, bringing vitality and life to any space.
Avoid cactus: This plant can disrupt the energy balance of your home.
Avoid artificial plants: These do not generate or support Qi and can accumulate dust, which can lead to negative energy.
Pay attention to mirror placement
“Mirrors in feng shui areassociated with the metal element and can be powerful tools for enhancing the energy of your home. However, their placement is crucial to avoid disrupting the natural balance and harmony,” says Master SiewLi.
Avoid certain directions:
East, southeast, and northeast: Do not place mirrors in these areas as they can disrupt the wood energy, essential for harmony and bonding among family members. This is especially important for maintaining children’s health.
Avoid these positionings:
Mirrors should not face the main door, as this can absorb and reflect negative energy into the house. Similarly, mirrors should not face windows to prevent the reflection and absorption of outside negative energy.
Activate water feng shui for wealth
Are you thinking about adding a water feature in your home? Master SiewLi says that placing water elements in the wrong sectors can adversely affect the financial luck of family members.
“A feng shui master will assess your home’s unique energy map to determine the best locations for water elements, ensuring that they support and enhance wealth luck,” she explains.
“Every home is different, and a feng shui master can provide tailored advice to maximise the benefits of water feng shui.”
Harness romantic energy
To activate love and harmony in your home, identify the specific sector in your room that governs these energies before strategically placing certain items in this sector, says Master SiewLi.
Identify the sector: For 2024, the love and harmony sector is located in the southwest part of the room.
Place enhancing items: Place a rose-scented candle or diffuser in the southwest sector to attract love and harmony.
Nine peacock feathers: Arrange nine peacock feathers in a red vase in this area to enhance positive energy.
Couple photo: Display a photo of your partner and yourself in this sector to strengthen your relationship.
Avoid certain items: Do not place altars or spiritual prayer items in your bedroom, as these can interfere with the romantic and harmonious energy.
Bet on neutral colours
“In feng shui, activating positive energy doesn’t always depend on specific colours, as different individuals and sectors may have varying favourable colours and elements,” says Master SiewLi
“I suggest using neutral colours such as white, brown, or beige as a base. Enhance the good energy with paintings or ornaments.
“Alternatively, engage a feng shui practitioner to advise on suitable colours for the walls, tailored to household members and the correct elements and colours for the space.”
